Trying to reach an understanding of issues concerned with teaching and learning, therefore, implies getting to grips with a whole range of human issues such as the attitude of students, the politics within departments and the ethos and environment of the institution. Technical-rational approaches are unlikely to be successful, as a prime element of their methodology is the narrowing of problems to simple hypotheses by holding other variables constant. This implies ignoring much of the complexity of a teaching and learning system.

One of the greatest strengths of action research is that it is a quite straightforward practical approach to tackling issues of substance. The methodology is not complex and it does not require the researcher to learn complex and difficult data-gathering or analytical skills. It is, then, within the capabilities of teachers or practitioners to research their own teaching and conduct projects within their own classrooms. There is no need to rely upon outside experts, researchers or external authorities.

The mediating role of teaching approaches has also been investigated. Both Kember and Kwan (in press) and Trigwell and Prosser (1996b) have established a relationship Quality through actiona learning and research 27 between conceptions of and approaches to teaching. It should be noted, though, that the formulations of approaches to teaching were rather different. Less well investigated are the various potential influences upon teaching approaches and beliefs about teaching.
