How bad and how quickly this occurs is different in each individual. One source of stress is the environment including daily routines, activities, and interactions with caregivers (formal and informal). However, a recent study showed that if someone is diagnosed with dementia between the ages of 60-69, on average it takes just under seven years to go from being diagnosed with dementia, to being severely affected, and ultimately to dying due to frailty of body and mind. There are a wealth of good practice examples cited in the Triangle of Care guide, these are held on the RCN Virtual Ward (with even more not listed).

These brain changes may explain why people who have a history of childhood trauma are more likely to experience depression. With a specialist team dedicated to help people with early onset dementia, our services are designed for people under 65 years who have been diagnosed. Maintaining that focus by screening out distractions overloads our capacity for conscious attention.5 Yet, exposure to settings that are visually interesting (having “high fascination”) have been found to aid directed attention recovery.6 Comparing memory retention in people viewing low versus high fascination scenes in built and natural environments, respectively, people viewing natural environments performed significantly better (see Figure 1).6 So, in the case of offices and schools, where one must focus on tasks, the addition of natural features could significantly improve attention and content retention rates.
